Practice of Generosity (Dana)

  • At the heart of Buddhist practice lies the ancient tradition of dāna, or generosity. Rooted in the teachings of the Buddha, dāna is a foundational practice that encourages the cultivation of an open heart and the offering of support without expectation of return. This profound act of giving creates a reciprocal relationship between the giver, the recipient, and the wider community—nurturing interdependence and mutual care.

  • Generosity of Heart: Beyond just donating money, dāna is an inner attitude of open-handedness, countering the natural human tendency toward selfishness, clinging, and greed. [1]

  • The First Perfection: It is the foundational parami (transcendent perfection) that prepares the mind for higher levels of training, such as ethics and wisdom.

  • "Giving" (Not Just Donation): Dāna is any form of giving—sharing knowledge, time, comfort, or material goods, including providing food and support to the Sangha

  • Support for the Dharma: It is through dāna that Buddhist teachings (Dharma) have been sustained for 2,500 years, relying on the mutual support between monastics and the lay community.

  • Your Donations help us to cover our operational expenses: Scholarships, Marketing and Offices expenses, Rent and Stipend to our teacher.

What People Are Saying

I had been looking for a meditation community in San Diego for a couple of years, and I am so grateful to have found OG Zen. It is truly a refuge for all beings. Sensei Shinzan offers a grounded, skillful, and practical approach to meditation. In fact he is the most down to earth teacher I have ever met. He brings a beautiful, cross-cultural perspective to Buddhist practice, making it accessible and relatable to people from all backgrounds. Shinzan also works very hard to cultivate a strong sense of community by hosting retreats and events, like an annual Dia de los Muertos celebration. I have so much love in my heart for the warm, kind, and compassionate community at OG Zen. This place is a hidden gem for anyone wishing to practice meditation, grow as a human being, and be part of a truly special community.
