Spiritual Friendship
Keeping Zen Alive!
One day, a man approached Ikkyu and asked:
“Master, will you please write me some maxims of the highest wisdom?”
Ikkyu took his brush and wrote, “Attention.”
“Is that all?” asked the man.
Ikkyu then wrote, “Attention, Attention.”
“Well,” said the man, “I really don’t see much depth in what you have written.”
Finally, Ikkyu wrote the same word three times, “Attention, Attention, Attention.”
Half-angered, the man demanded, “What does that word ‘Attention’ mean?”
Ikkyu gently responded, “Attention means attention.”

Celebrating 10 Years of Dharma in San Diego & A Heartfelt Request
Hello Friends!
A week ago, we shared some exciting news – OG is celebrating 10 years of practice, community, and refuge. I want to offer my deepest gratitude and a full bow to those who have already responded with such commitment and generosity.
If you haven’t had a chance to donate yet, we want to offer a gentle reminder. Every contribution, large or small, helps us sustain the sangha we know and love.
Your support helps us to:
Rent our beautiful home and garden and maintain the zendo
Offer free or low-cost programs to the community
Offer scholarships for retreats and sesshins
Provide a stipend so OG can have its very own Dharma teacher, leader and administrator
Continue growing into the next 10 years and beyond!
Every contribution, large or small, helps strengthen the foundation of this sangha and supports its continued presence in Southern California. What this community becomes is shaped by all of us together.
Please consider making a donation to Open Gate Zen Collective, a California-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
With deep gratitude and a full bow,
Sensei José Shinzan Palma
